     Leslie Perez was leading six opponents Tuesday in early returns in
     her bid to become the Harris County Democratic Party chair.
         Perez, 56, a transsexual who was once convicted of murder, had
     a naarrow early lead on incumbent Democratic Party Chairman Mike
     Charlton.
         Perez, under the name Leslie Douglas Ashley, was convicted of
     the 1961 murder of a local businessman and later underwent a sex
     change operation.  The death sentence was overturned and in a
     second trial she received a 15-year sentence.  Perez was paroled in
     1971.
