Background
|
Charles Jackson McKinney-answers to C.J., or to
Chance. He's about 5'2", very thin, and has the odd look
of someone with mixed heritage that mixed poorly. He has
dark curly hair which is slightly wiry, and shows hints of
red in the sun. His eyes are green, his skin is the brown
of a Chicano, and despite this, he has distinctive
freckling all over his face. His age is somewhat
indeterminate-he looks prematurely aged and worn, but he
also has some childlike qualities. Most people assume he
is around 30. He generally has an air of careless
opulence about him-the rumpled Armani suit he slept in the
night before, the run down Jaguar in need of a paint
job. He also has a casually lavish generosity- dropping a
hundred dollar bill for coffeshop breakfast or buying
drinks for the entire bar. Till last call.
He is generally affable and cheery, always a kind word to
everyone he knows, and to everyone he doesn't. He uses two
hands to shake hand, smiles, makes eye contact, and
appears to be genuinely interested in everyone he talks
to. He loves to joke around and flirt playfully, and seems
to get along with just about everybody. He is also
ridiculously lucky. His picnics are never rained out, he
never has to wait in line, or for a cab, always finds
convenient parking, and despite the fact he's kind of
goofy looking, is always accompanied by attractive women.
He has been a noble about 15 years, and hasn't changed in
appearance in that time. When he first came into the
familia, he was obviously poor and had been treated
badly. Since then, though, he has raised his fortunes to a
vast degree. He went to college for a few years, started
dressing better, and now he has business all over the
world. No one really knows how much money he has, least of
all him, but a recent Forbes review put him in the top 50
richest men in America list. Most of his time is spent on
Earth, on business. Those who have talked with him much,
or have done some research, know that he made his money in
a combination of ways-lottery wins, casino wins, and stock
market investments being the primary ones. He is also
involved with a number of the few major startup companies
to survive the crash.
He does a lot of support work for an organization called
Second Chance, which is a national not-for-profit group he
founded five years ago with the goal to provide education,
community values, and progressive opportunities for inner
city and underprivileged youth. It has recently expanded
to provide adult literacy programs, meals and lodging for
the homeless, as well as mental health counseling, and job
training and placement programs for the homeless and
unemployed. It is harder to find out about his mortal
life. He doesn't talk about it much, and bringing up the
subject is one of the few ways to bring down his good
mood. He also appears to be extraordinarily devout,
praying before every meal, before sleep, before taking
Harvest.
